The only thing standing between you and a platter of delectable stone crabs at this South Beach standard is the Maître d’- and possibly few crisp twenty dollar bills to speed up the seating process. Established in 1913, Joe’s Stone Crab has never taken reservations but they don’t have to– their claws enjoy a cult-like following and are well worth the wait. The medium-sized stone crabs are the best, especially when accompanied with Joe’s creamy mustard dipping sauce. Their other sides, like fried green tomatoes, creamed spinach and Lyonnaise potatoes– are satisfying, and hefty enough to be shared. Stone crabs are expensive, but Joe’s menu also features other seafood dishes that are moderately priced.
Takeout crabs are available, but sitting in the bar’s lounge area is a great way enjoy a cocktail and stone crabs without having to endure the long wait. The people watching is a bonus. Joe’s is open for lunch and dinner during stone crab season (October to May) then reopens for dinner only May 25 to August 1. 11 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach, FL, 33139. (305) 673-0365.
