XO sauce is available at Asian Grocery stores

The name sets the bar pretty high, but Yummy House in Carrollwood surpasses expectations, delivering some pretty darn yummy and flavorful food to the Tampa Bay area. Offering Hong Kong-style Chinese specialties like to-die-for duck and Salt & Pepper squid -– this is a not to be missed Tampa stop. My favorite, the Shrimp and Scallops in XO sauce, is splashed with a spicy, garlicky sauce that is light and truly addictive! Over and over, I keep going back for that dish.

I wanted to find out what made XO sauce so delicious, so I did a little research and found out XO sauce is a seafood sauce used in southern China made from dried shrimp and scallops, chili pepper and garlic. The name XO sauce comes from XO (extra-old) cognac, which is the Western liquor de jour in Hong Kong. XO is also a pop culture phrase used to describe quality and luxury.  Apparently, my taste buds are fancy-schmancy without even trying! Even though the prestigious sauce was once relegated only to gourmet seafood houses, XO sauce can now be found on grocery store shelves, produced by Asian food companies like Lee Kum Kee, ANJI, and Amoy.

Since I’ve never been to Hong Kong, I’ll probably pass on the store bought sauces. Until I get there though, Yummy House is my go to place for authentic Chinese cooking and my XO fix. 2202 West Waters Avenue, Tampa, FL 33604. Tel: (813) 915-2828.
