Ladies cut their Macho Burger in half before devouring

During our recent trip to Texas, Mister M introduced me to a Mission City institution, Chris Madrid’s. Known for its mom-and-pop vibe, CM’s has a variety of specialty burgers, fresh cut French fries, nachos and chalupas. Succumbing to adamant recommendations by the nice lady behind the register and Mister M, I settled in on the Tostada burger, and Mister M on a Cheddar Cheezy burger. Our philosophy was go big or go home so of course, we “macho”-sized ours, which means we got the large, half-pound version.

Housed in an old gas station, Chris Madrid’s atmosphere has a wholesome feel complemented by lots of Texas beer signs and a huge patio and addition that indicates CM’s has grown over time to accommodate its unparalleled popularity. It’s a cool spot that lets you get a taste of the local San Antonio flavor.

Now, back to the burger. I confess that I’m a cheeseburger purist— I loathe bacon, fancy cheese or grilled mushrooms on my burger. I want the beef to shine. So I had guarded expectations about how the Macho Tostado burger, with its laundry list of Tex-Mex toppings, could really be that good.

I was wrong. The Tostada burger delivered to our table was a perfect bundle of ooey-gooey goodness. The eggy bun had a beautiful sheen to it. The half-pound patty, pounded thin, spilled out well beyond the bun and was topped with chopped onions, homemade refried beans, crushed tortilla chips, pico de gallo, and cheese for as far as the eye could see.

I cut it in half and dug in.

My world will never be the same. All other cheeseburgers will forever be measured against the Tostado Burger.

What  burger joint sets the standard for you?

Oh! Did I forget to mention their bean & cheese nachos? Yum!!! Try them next time you get to San Antonio! They are not your typical nachos.
